Fat removal, commonly known as liposuction or lipo, is a popular cosmetic procedure who are looking to remove excess or unwanted body fat. Fat removal surgery targets areas of stubborn fat that are difficult to lose through healthy eating and exercise.

WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION?

Fat removal is a procedure that removes excess fat cells beneath the skin using a hollow stainless-steel tube, with the assistance of a powerful vacuum to reshape and contour the area of treatment to give a shapely appearance. Multiple areas of the body can be treated for fat removal at the same time, whether you are looking to remove fat from your stomach, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms or neck. Advanced Aesthetic Specialist is highly experienced team of Doctors and state-of-the-art operating facilities are the right choice for your fat removal procedure.

Fat removal is not designed as a treatment for obesity or a weight loss solution, it aims to correct and improve bodily contours by removing pockets of fat from areas of the body that are resistant to diet and exercise.

Liposuction is most effective in patients who have gained excess weight following pregnancy or due to ageing but still have good skin quality and elasticity. Liposuction is not an effective procedure for patients with excess loose skin, or those looking to improve cellulite dimpling or stretch marks.

It’s important to note that liposuction treatment can only be offered to those who are a healthy weight and have stubborn areas of fat that can’t be removed with lifestyle changes. Patients should be aware that they will need to undergo physical assessments before being deemed eligible for the procedure.

Different types of Liposuction procedures

  • Traditional fat removal –
A shallow tube (cannula) is inserted through the small incisions and manipulated to break down the fat cells so they can be vacuumed out of the body.
  • Vaser Liposuction
Uses ultrasonic energy whereby patented small probes transmit sound waves which then break apart the fat on contact.
  • Microaire liposuction
Also known as power-assisted liposuction, this type uses a power-assisted cannula that vibrates to break up fat cells. This is recommended for precise fat removal.
  • Fat removal combined with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
Fat removal will typically be combined with a tummy tuck if a patient presents with loose excess skin that needs to be removed from the abdomen.

After the treatment, patients may experience some discomfort, bruising, and swelling in the affected areas, this is normal following a fat removal procedure. Pain relief will be provided to ease discomfort, bruising and swelling should start to subside after 7-21 days. Every patient heals differently, therefore, swelling and bruising can take 12 weeks or longer to subside.

We advise patients to take 7-10 days off work following fat removal procedure. Patients will be required to wear tight compression garments for 4-6 weeks post-op to aid healing and prevent excess swelling.

It is important that patients attend all their post-operative appointments at Advanced Aesthetic Specialist Centre, so we can monitor their healing and ensure there is no damage to their blood vessels.

FAQ's

How much fat can be removed with liposuction?

The amount of fat that can be removed with liposuction treatment is patient-dependent. However, most can expect the removal of around 6-8lbs of fat from their chosen area(s).

During your consultations with our Professional Doctro, you will be given a more detailed prediction of how much fat can be removed, based on your body mass index (BMI) and lifestyle.

A good candidate for liposuction is someone who lives a healthy lifestyle and has realistic expectations about what can be achieved. At Advanced Aesthetic Specialist, we requires you to have a BMI between 18-30 to ensure you will get the best results possible.

How soon can I exercise after surgery?

Vigorous exercise and high-intensity workouts should be avoided for at least 4 weeks post-op. However, gentle movements, like walking, are encouraged to help prevent swelling and reduce the likelihood of developing blood clots and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Where can I have liposuction?

The most common areas for liposuction are:

  • Abdomen (stomach)
  • Flanks (muffin tops or hips)
  • Outer thighs
  • Inner thighs
  • Arms

Other popular areas are knees (the fatty deposits above the knee cap) and neck area (to remove a double chin).

These can be performed in combination with each other or as individual procedures.

It’s important to note that there are limits as to how many areas you can have treated at the same time due to time constraints and physical requirements. This can be discussed during the consultation process.

If you get liposuction does the fat come back?

To maintain results after liposuction, a healthy diet and exercise are important. If you eat more calories than you burn off, then weight will accumulate after the treatment.

Liposuction is not a ‘weight-loss’ method and should only be used to remove stubborn fat from problem areas to improve your overall shape. If you follow the guidance of your surgeon, the results are long-lasting.

Does liposuction leave a scar?

The incisions made for liposuction are very small (usually less than 0.5cm) and are located near the site where the fat will be removed. These incisions will form scars which will fade over time.

To help reduce the appearance of scars, we recommend you protect them from the sun (using high SPF and covering them up when possible), and avoid sunbeds, as the heat and UV rays increase pigment in the scar, making them more noticeable.
